Day Three - Montmarte and a Seine Cruise
Montmartre is a neighborhood located in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, on a hill overlooking the city. It is known for its charming cobbled streets and bohemian atmosphere. It was our favorite neighborhood!
Once a haven for intellectuals, including Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, and Dali, the neighborhood's artistic legacy can still be seen today. There are neat galleries, studios and interesting statues like St Denis, holding his own head after being beheaded for his Christian faith and the Le Passe-Muraille or the "man who could walk through walls".
The crowning jewel of Montmartre is the iconic Sacré-Cœur Basilica, which sits at the top of the hill and offers panoramic views of Paris. The basilica was built in the late 19th century as a symbol of reconciliation after the Franco-Prussian War. After the long walk to the top of the hill through the quaint streets and gardens a welcome funicular is there to bring you back down to the foot of the hill.
Our guide William pointed out that Montmartre has an original fan like awning made of glass at the entrance of the metro. The "I Love You" wall is a must see as it boasts 612 squares of enameled lava on which I Love You is written 311 times in 250 languages.
Montmartre charmed us with it's glimpse into Paris's artistic and bohemian past.
